If your roof and gutter deicing system is not on thermostatic or snow-sensing control, we recommend keeping it energized until you know there is little chance of snow and the temperature will be above 32°F for most of the day. This is usually early spring but varies with geographical location.

We would suggest using eyelet-type cable ties (Panduit PLC1.5I-S8 or equal) that wrap around the cable and are attached with a sheet metal screw through the eyelet in the cable tie. The thermal insulation should hold the cable next to the metal surface.  The heating cable should be run parallel to the flutes of the metal deck, so that there is good contact between the metal deck and the heating cable.  If the thermal insulation is not up against the underside of the metal deck, then use metal J-shaped channel attached to the underside of the deck.  For more information on these fastening methods, see the Raycem RaySol System Installation and Operation Manual.


Generally, Do-It-Yourself heating cables run in the 3-watt/ft. to 6-watt/ft. range. Our Frostex heating cable will produce a minimum of 3 watts/ft. on an insulated 50°F pipe. Since this a self-regulating cable, the power output changes with pipe temperature. For instance, if the pipe is at 0°F, Frostex will produce 6 watts/ft., at 80°F it produces less than 1 watt/ft. This means the cable can safely be installed on plastic pipe without worry of it damaging or melting the pipe. Frostex Plus can also be overlapped without worry of overheating and damaging the cable.


You can run RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet inside a PVC pipe as long as it contains only water, is not pressurized and the end terminations are outside the pipe where they cannot be immersed in water. The preassembled RAYCHEM Gardian (waterproof, lengths from 6 to 100 feet) may be used in the same manner.  If the pipe contains solid waste, the cable must be installed on the outside of the pipe and covered with thermal pipe insulation.


Put an appropriately-sized heating cable on it with an appropriate amount of  thermal insulation. For example; assuming this is for your home, you have a  1" metal pipe in a dry location (not outdoors) and the lowest temperature in your area is -20F. You have 1/2" of fiberglass insulation. You would need either RAYCHEM WinterGard Plus heating cable or RAYCHEM Gardian preassembled heating cable.  Frostex is also appropriate for dry area lines and very easy to use, although multiple runs may be required depending upon minimum ambient temperature.


We do not recommend installing either Frostex, RAYCHEM WinterGard or RAYCHEM Gardian cables behind walls where they cannot be inspected, because there could be damage to the cable during or after construction.  If the pipe were exposed, our Gardian pre-assembled cable would be a perfect choice for this pipe, either in the 18' or 24' length.  The Gardian should be plugged into a GFI receptacle.  We offer the H931 Plug-in GFCI Adapter which easily converts a standard receptacle. Be sure to use 1/2 inch pipe insulation over the heating cable and pipe.


RAYCHEM WinterGard can be used on a PVC pipe at normal ambient temperatures without softening or melting it. This occurs because the heating cable self-regulates its power output. When the pipe wall is cold it produces more power. When the pipe wall is warm it produces almost no power.


As long as the power connection and splices are kept above grade, RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet can be run underground, on the outside of the pipe. Always use a ground fault protection device, such as a GFI circuit breaker or the RAYCHEM H908 Plug-in Power Connection Kit w/GFEPD to monitor for damage to the cable. Keep in mind that the pipe will have to be insulated and the insulation will have to be waterproof. The insulation also serves as mechanical protection for the heating cable. Never bury WinterGard cables underground unless they are mechanically protected from rocks and shifting soil.


No. As long as you have enough to terminate the power connection kit and end seal, there is no minimum length requirement.


Yes, self-regulating heating cables like RAYCHEM WinterGard can be safely overlapped without concern about burnout.


Yes. Because it is a parallel electrical device, it can be cut to any length without affecting its power output per foot. (Do not alter the length of pre-assembled RAYCHEM Gardian). The cable can also be spliced and teed.


No. For a variety of reasons, RAYCHEM WinterGard cables should not be used on oil lines; they are intended ONLY for water lines. Any oil products leaking from valves or fittings would cause the cable to go cold, and RAYCHEM WinterGard may not have the right amount of heat for residential oil lines. Drain or waste water lines may be traced externally or internally (with RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet) as long as they contain only water, are not pressurized and the end terminations are outside the pipe.


Once you know your pipe diameter, minimum expected temperature and voltage, use the chart on pages 10-11 in the RAYCHEM Self-Regulating Heating Products Application and Design Guide to determine how much RAYCHEM WinterGard cable you will need. For instance, a 1inch; metal pipe can be protected down to -20F by using 1 foot of WinterGard H311 cable per foot of pipe. This is based on at least 1inch; fiberglass insulation. For a 2inch; plastic pipe protected down to -20 F with 1/2 inch fiberglass insulation, 1.8 feet of WinterGard Plus H621 or H621 (dry areas) or WinterGard Wet H612 or H622 (outdoor/wet locations) cable will be needed per foot of pipe. And be sure to add extra cable for valves and flanges and for making connections.


As long as the RAYCHEM WinterGard cable has been properly installed and maintained, occasional pipe sweating (condensation) should not be a problem. However, condensation which soaks and saturates fiberglass insulation can create problems. Saturated fiberglass insulation can decrease the insulation efficiency which could lead to frozen pipes. Saturated insulation should be replaced.


Because it is self-regulating, RAYCHEM WinterGard cable power output must be referenced with some temperature, so we say that WinterGard H311 produces a minimum of 3 watts/ft on an insulated metal pipe at 40F, WinterGard Plus H611 and H621 produce 6 watts, and WinterGard Wet H612 and H622 produce 6 watts. At 0F, the minimum output is just about double what it was at 40F.


The RAYCHEM WinterGard product line does not include monitoring panels.  The DigiTrace AMC-F5 ambient-sensing thermostat is available for pipe freeze protection. For roof and gutter de-icing, the ETI RM-3, RM-4 and LCD-7A moisture/temperature sensors are recommended.  Sometimes manual control is used to keep costs down. Because the cables are self-regulating, there is no danger of overheating when no controller is used.

Yes. We recommend you use the DigiTrace C910-485 controller. It is a  single-circuit electronic controller with built-in ground fault monitoring  and two RTD temperature inputs. It will alarm on High and Low temperature,  voltage and amperage. One RTD could monitor the pipe temperature for  control and high/low alarms.
A less expensive option is the DigiTrace AMC-F5 thermostat for line or ambient sensing, but it doesn't provide any monitoring capability.


You can install RAYCHEM WinterGard and RAYCHEM Gardian heating cable on buried pipe that is insulated above and below grade.  However the terminations for each end of the cable must be above grade. An easy solution is to double the cable on the pipe to below the frost line, keeping the end cap above-grade. If you think the water line is freezing further down below grade, a better solution may be to use the WinterGard In-Pipe Heating Cable.The cable is installed inside the pipe and does not require the end termination to be above grade. Depending on the product you use, you may or may not have to insulate the pipe to the frost line


You should not assume that the RAYCHEM H908 is defective. If the indicator light is off, the unit may have tripped on ground fault. If you press the reset button and the indicator light does not come back on, the cable or heat-shrink connection or end seal may have grounded and tripped the unit. If this is the case, the cable, H908-to-cable splice or end seal will have to be repaired. Any testing or repair work should be done by a qualified electrician.    If the indicator light is on but the cable is not getting warm, there may be an open circuit in the H908-to-cable splice or the cable may have been damaged from moisture ingress at some point in time. A current reading should be made to see if the cable is producing any power at all. A WinterGard H311 cable should draw about .025 A/ft at 40F or 2.5A per 100 ft. The RAYCHEM WinterGard Plus or RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet heating cables will draw about .05 A/ft at 40F or 5A per 100 ft. At 0F, these cables will draw about twice as much current.    If there is no measurable current draw, the cable may be completely dead or the H908-to-cable splice may be open and need repair. To test for this case, the heat-shrink splice should be opened and the H908 tested for voltage output. If no voltage is detected and the indicator light is on, it is defective. If there is a voltage present, the cable has been damaged and will need to be replaced.


The 6" tape is for securing the braid at the end seal for the H311, H611 and H621 RAYCHEM WinterGard heating cables. These cables have no outer jacket so the braid could unravel or slide back from the end of the cable without tape to hold it.  Drawing #4 on page 11 of the RAYCHEM H900 installation instructions shows where it goes.


No. We require that you use RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet. The water-proof  outer jacket on WinterGard Wet is required due to the potential exposure to ground water. You also need a waterproof closed-cell insulation over the cable to keep  moisture out and to maintain the its thermal properties. The insulation also serves as mechanical protection for the heating cable.   As long as the power connection and splices are kept above grade, WinterGard Wet can be run underground, on the outside of the pipe. Always use a ground fault protection device, such as a GFI circuit breaker or the RAYCHEM H908 Plug-in Power Connection Kit w/GFEPD to monitor for damage to the cable. Never bury WinterGard cables underground unless they are mechanically protected from rocks and shifting soil.


RAYCHEM WinterGard heating cable will not harm plastic pipes because it self-regulates its power output. Install the cable on the outside of the 2" line, attaching it with RAYCHEM H903 fiberglass tape then insulate over that.  Design the system based on the 2" diameter pipe. Try to keep the pipe off the ground by supporting it with piers or suspending it from the joists so it will not be submerged in standing water beneath the structure. Use either a ground-fault circuit breaker with the RAYCHEM H900 Power Connection Kit (hard-wired) or the H908 120V Plug-in Power Connection Kit which includes ground-fault equipment protection (best).  For this application I would assume a 0°F minimum ambient temperature, 1" insulation and 120V power source. You would need 65' of WinterGard Wet Heating Cable (spiral the extra on the pipe and leave 1' on each end for terminations). Or, for a very simple option, use the RAYCHEM Gardian preassembled cable, W51-75P, winding extra cable around one end of the pipe.  Plug into a GFI outlet or use our RAYCHEM H931 Plug-in GFCI Adapter.


It sounds like you have a 5mA ground fault breaker. You should use a 30mA Equipment Protection Device (EPD) breaker. Or, you may have a ground fault in the cable. To determine if you do, you will need to test the cable with an insulation-resistance tester, also known as a Megger. One lead of the IR test device is connected to the bus wires and the other to the cable braid. You should have at least 20 megohms of resistance at a test voltage of 500Vdc. Most electricians have a 500Vdc IR tester. Ground leakage in RAYCHEM WinterGard cables can occur from damage to the cable jacket, improperly stripped cable or water in the power connection, splice/tee connections or end seal from incorrect assembly. If you cannot test the cable, try remaking the connections or replacing the cable.


We currently do not have a UL Listed end-of-line monitoring light for RAYCHEM WinterGard cables. We do not recommend modifying the end seal. This would invalidate the UL approval.


There are two nVent Thermal Management self-regulating cables for under slab heating. RAYCHEM ElectroMelt, which is direct buried in a slab and has a thick orange outer jacket and white inside jacket. And, RAYCHEM RaySol which is either installed in conduit embedded in the slab or attached beneath a slab without conduit. It has a shiny black outer jacket and blue inner jacket. The ElectroMelt (EM2-XR) cable is about twice the size as a RaySol cable and much more rugged. The ElectroMelt power connection and end seal kits are heat shrink tubes with a black mastic inside. RaySol cables do not use a mastic to seal the electrical connections, the heat shrink is only on the bus wires and braid.


Conventional heat tapes use metal wires to produce a constant heat output, much like the elements in a toaster. RAYCHEM WinterGard self-regulating heating cable uses a patented conductive plastic core to continually adjust its heat output in relation to changing temperature conditions all along the pipe. As ambient or pipe temperatures change, the conductive plastic core expands or contracts slightly, altering the resistance of the core, which is also the heating element.This is why RAYCHEM WinterGard cable, unlike conventional heat tapes, can be wrapped closely together, overlapped or overinsulated without burning out.


Heating cable approvals with UL and CSA are system listings, meaning that the cable and accessories are only recognized when used together as a system.  Also, nVent Thermal Management's 2 year warranty only applies to systems wherein our accessories have been used.  Once the cable is cut to length, use H903 Tape (glass tape) to attach the cable to the pipe every 12 to 24 inches. To terminate the cable ends to power there are two choices; the RAYCHEM H900 and the RAYCHEM H908, and both include end caps. Use the H900 Power Connection Kit for a hardwired power connection for 120V or 240V WinterGard cables.  Junction box is not included with the H900.  The H908 Plug-In Power Connection Kit is for 120V WinterGard cables and comes with a grounded (three-prong) plug and includes built-in ground-fault equipment protection (27mA trip level).  The circuit breaker rating of the H908 is 15A. If you need to splice or tee the cable, you can use the H910 Splice and Tee Kit which provides material for one splice or one tee, extra end cap included. The H910 kit requires a heat gun to shrink the tubing around the cables. If you do not have a ground-fault equipment protection circuit breaker (27 to 30 mA trip level) you can use the H921 120V Ground-Fault-Protected Junction Box Kit along with the H900 Power Connection Kit (required).  For roof and gutter de-icing systems, roof clips are available in bags of 10 each -- H913 or boxes of 50 each -- H914. For strain relief at all downspout locations, use the H915 Downspout Hanger.  Extra end caps are available in the H912 Gel-filled End Seal Kit (2 each). Yes, each of the five RAYCHEM WinterGard cables has a maximum circuit length. Going beyond that can cause a frozen pipe at the far end and over-heating and electrical hazard at the power end. The maximum circuit length for RAYCHEM WinterGard cables is determined by these factors: start-up temperature, voltage, circuit breaker rating and location of cable, ie. a) on pipe under pipe insulation, b) in drain line or roof/gutter, exposed to water and air temperature.


Generally, RAYCHEM WinterGard systems do not benefit from a thermostat because they are self-regulating.  On the other hand,  conventional constant wattage heat tapes will overheat and burn out if not wired with a thermostat.   However, when long lengths of self-regulating cable are involved, it can be economical to use good quality thermostats for energy savings. An AMC-F5 thermostat (or a contactor should be used with it). The thermostat would be wired through the phase leg of the power supply upstream from the cable-to-power junction box. For roof and gutter de-icing systems, a combination moisture/temperature sensor is recommended, such as the ETI RM-3 or RM-4.


RAYCHEM WinterGard cables are part of a self-regulating pipe heating system manufactured by nVent Thermal Management for freeze protecting insulated metal and plastic water pipes and for roof and gutter de-icing. RAYCHEM WinterGard cables should be connected ONLY with approved RAYCHEM WinterGard accessories.  RAYCHEM WinterGard products are packaged for merchandising at wholesaler locations; Plumbing, Electrical and Refrigeration/HVAC.  Generally, RAYCHEM WinterGard products are intended for Light Commercial and Residential applications.

If you are using Frostex or RAYCHEM WinterGard and/or RAYCHEM Gardian self-regulating cables, there is no concern with  damaging your pipes. The cables adjust their power output when the pipe  starts to heat up and will never exceed the maximum exposure temperature for plastic pipes. There is also no need to put anti-freeze in a pipe that is heat traced with the above products and properly insulated.  However, conventional constant wattage heat tapes can definitely overheat a plastic pipe when there is not adequate heat-sink (water) or if the pipe is over-insulated.


RAYCHEM WinterGard cables are tested to last at least 20 years on a pipe, under pipe insulation.


If this is a 6 watt per foot cable, it must be RAYCHEM WinterGard. The RAYCHEM WinterGard product line offers the DigiTrace AMC-F5 ambient-sensing thermostat for control. Or, for roof and gutter de-icing, the ETI RM3 or RM4 moisture/temperature sensors are available.  Since this a residential/light commercial product line, typically the cables are installed only for freeze protection and roof and gutter de-icing. Either a thermostat or manual control is used to keep costs down. Using a ground-fault protection device (required) provides monitoring of the cable for damage. If more sophisticated monitoring and control is needed, the DigiTrace C910-485, designed for the Spec. Commercial Construction market can be used. These controllers monitor temperature, ground fault, current, voltage and more. The controllers may be purchased from your local Commercial Construction representative. I assume that you are using Sch 40 PVC pipe. Because this is a sewage line, we do not have a product that can go inside of the pipe.  (Our WinterGard In-Pipe Heating Cable is good for tracing the inside of pressurized potable water lines or pressurized effluent lines.)  This pipe would have to be excavated, temporarily. For buried pipe, a closed-cell foam insulation such as polyurethane or a flexible elastomer such as Armaflex must be used so that the insulation does not absorb water and become useless. A PVC weather barrier around the insulation would also be advisable. Assuming RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet are used, a 6" line at a 0°F soil temperature and 1" of insulation requires 1.6 feet of cable per foot of pipe.  For a -20°F soil temperature and the same insulation, 3 feet of cable per foot of pipe would be required.


Yes, all RAYCHEM WinterGard H series cables are UL Listed (718K Pipe Heating Cable) when installed per the manual which is supplied with the Rayhem H900 Power Connection Kit or RAYCHEM H908 Plug-In Power Connection Kit. Additionally, H612 and H622 are UL System Listed (877Z De-Icing and Snow Melting Equipment). All WinterGard H series cables are CSA certified for Pipe Heating (LR21133). RAYCHEM Gardian cables are UL Listed for Residential and Mobile Home Pipe Heating (60J9) and CSA certified.


Yes. It can be found in the RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet Design Installation and Maintenance Guide, document number H56804. Maintenance should be performed at least once a year before winter. These five steps should be taken; 1. Visually inspect the system to ensure no physical damage has occurred; 2. Check the ground-fault device for proper operation; 3. Ensure gutters and downspouts are free of debris; 4. Test all cable circuits for proper electrical insulation resistance (see "Test Methods" in this document); 5. Make sure the control system is functioning.


Frostex heating cables cannot be installed in lengths that exceed 50 feet. Your options are to use multiple 50-foot circuits or use one of the following products which can be installed in longer lengths:RAYCHEM Gardian pre-assembled heating cables which are available up to 100 feet in length. RAYCHEM WinterGard Plus heating cables, which like Frostex, come in cut-to-length reels with termination kits. This product can be installed in lengths up to 250 feet.


No, the RAYCHEM QuickNet heating cable is a constant wattage cable and can never be cut. The mesh that the cable is attached to can be cut.


No, the RAYCHEM QuickNet heating cable is a constant wattage cable and can never be crossed.


Yes, the RAYCHEM QuickNet heating cable can be loosened from the mesh to allow for installation in some areas. Since the QuickNet floor warming system has a system approval, the heating cable can not be installed with smaller spacing than delivered.


The RAYCHEM QuickNet floor warming system must be controlled by the QuickStat thermostat. The floor sensor is placed between two runs of the heating cable.


The RAYCHEM QuickNet heating cable can be repaired using the QuickNet-RK repair kit. If the mat is installed under tile, the damage will have to be located. In some areas we have technicans who can perform this work. Contact us at for assistance.


The RAYCHEM QuickNet floor warming system can be installed under laminate floors if they are floating only and engineered wood flooring either floating or glued.


Typical sub floors for the RAYCHEM QuickNet floor warming system include cement or wood. Insulation such as Easymat or Wedi Board should be installed between the cement floor and the cable to provide a thermal break.


The RAYCHEM QuickNet heating cable can be embedded in tile adhesive or mortar.


Follow the manufacturers’ recommendation for the tile adhesive and mortar. Typically, 3 days after the installation is sufficient.


The RAYCHEM QuickNet floor warming system can maintain floor temperatures up to 85°F or more.


For 120 volt, the RAYCHEM QuickNet floor warming system can be installed in a 140 square foot area, with one QuickStat thermostat. For 240 volt, the QuickNet floor warming system can be installed in a 280 square foot area, with one QuickStat thermostat. For larger areas, multiple QuickStat thermostats are required or an additional relay controlled by the thermostat such as the Omron relay (Model G7L-2A-BUBJ-CB AC200/240).

For the current draw of each RAYCHEM QuickNet mat, refer to the product selection table on pages 8-9 of the QuickNet System Installation Manual (H57704). The QuickStat thermostat is rated for loads up to 15A.


RAYCHEM WinterGard Wet roof and gutter de-icing cables produce 8 watts per foot in snow and ice.  The ETI GIT-3A automatic roof and gutter de-icing controller will switch the system on only when the outdoor temperature is below 38°F and moisture is detected in the gutter.

Typical fiberglass materials are not an issue, other materials are too numerous to address. As long as the cable is embedded in mortar, its sheath temperature will not exceed ~100°F and should not cause a problem. Consult the membrane manufacturer for material specifications


No. Any materials over the heating cable (other than mortar and tile) act as thermal insulators, which can reduce the effectiveness of QuickNet to heat the floor surface.


QuickNet mats cannot be used with vinyl or linoleum but can be used with engineered wood floors either glued or floating. It can also be used with laminate wood floors as long as they are float


Be careful with the wording “piggyback” or “daisy chain”. The mats cannot be connected to one another (in series), but can be wired in parallel. You can connect up to 140SF of a 120 V product to a QuickStat thermostat. You must purchase an extension mat QuickNet-10X-1 to expand the heated surface to 110SF.


Yes. We recommend the Omron relay (Model G7L-2A-BUBJ-CB AC200/240) for 240V systems. It must be used with a ground fault circuit breaker to meet NEC requirements for floor heating systems. Information about this relay can be found on our web site at


Yes, one QuickStat can handle up to 140SF at 120 volts and up to 280SF at 240 volts. This is typically done using a regular mat and extension mats.


The preferred method is to connect both cold leads in a surface-accessible junction box, then run standard house power wiring of 16 AWG or greater to the QuickStat.


Yes, use the QuickNet-RK repair kit when up to 5 inches of heating element in the QuickNet mat is damaged. If a longer section of cable is damaged, the mat must be replaced. The repair kit is c-CSA-us Certified so it is compliant with national and local electrical codes. However, because the condition of the damaged mat, site conditions and installer capability can vary, nVent Thermal Management does not warrant the repair or warrant that the repaired floor warming system will function properly. Use of the kit voids the warranty of the repaired portion of the heating cable.


The sensor wire can be extended, as long as the splice is accessible in the wall, not under the floor. You can extend the sensor wire up to 300 feet by using 20 AWG or greater low voltage wire.The cold lead wire can be extended up to 300 feet, using approved household wiring such as Romex, 16AWG or larger, following local code requirements. The QuickStat thermostat is typically near the QuickNet heating cable so extension of the cold lead is not common.


Yes. The warm up time may be affected, but the QuickStat thermostat will compensate.

When testing the sensor, verify that your meter is capable of measuring up to at least 25,000 Ω (25 KΩ) Use the highest resistance range (200K Ohms or greater) on your meter when testing the insulation resistance. The reading should be off scale where your meter may display “OL”, or “---“; refer to the manual for specifics on the meter you are using. Do not hold the leads in your hands, or lay them on ground when testing or you may get an artificially low reading. Keep them separated and suspended in air. Use the 200Ω range for measureing the mat resistance.


What you are referring to is an end seal. It doesn’t complete the circuit but is necessary for keeping water out and protection from a live circuit. If this is a WinterGard Wet cable, you will have to replace the end seal with part number H912 Gel-filled End Seal Kit. If this is our IceStop cable, the end seal part number is RayClic-E. Do not use tape or anything else than the end seal made for that cable.

Plugs are no longer available for Frostex II cables. Frostex II cables do not have a ground braid and cannot be ground fault protected which has been the requirement from the NEC since 1996. You will have to replace these cables with new one and 9800 Flex Fit Plug Kits.


Frostex II is a 120v cable.How can it work if the cable is not continuous? What is the Ohm reading supposed to be on the Frostex II?


Test the water temperature. After plugging in the system, wait about an hour. Turn on a water tap on the Frostex protected pipe and test the temperature of the water. It should feel warm almost immediately because the water heated by the Frostex heating cable will be briefly running through the pipe. If the water is warm, you have completed the installation. If the water is not warm, skip to “Troubleshooting.” Test the heating cable’s resistance. It is possible to test the resistance of Frostex heating cable using a multimeter. Follow these steps: 1) Be sure the 9800 FlexFit plug is unplugged. 2) Push in the red reset button on the plug. 3) Connect the two lead wires on the meter to the two flat prongs on the plug. The meter reading should be between 2 and 20,000 ohms. If your reading is within this range, you have completed the installation. If your reading is not within this range, repeat Step 3, “Install the 9800 FlexFit plug” and retest.


Manual Mode (Hand Icon) In this mode, the programmed schedule is not used and the setpoint temperature must be set manually. To place the QuickStat-TC in this mode: 1. Press the Mode/Ret button until the Hand icon appears on the display. 2. Set the temperature using the up/down arrow, Sun or Moon icon button. 3. To disable Manual mode, press the Mode/Ret button to change the mode to Automatic mode Clock Icon.


The QuickNet mats produce 12 watts per square foot. The attached manual give the amount of current for each size mat we make on pages 8 an d9.


The pipe is getting hot because the cable is still producing some power even though it is self-regulating. If you look at the power temperature curve in the design guide, you will see the cable is still producing 3W/ft at 80°F. The best way to manage this would be to use a line-sensing thermostat such as the AMC-F5 which will turn the power off when the pipe reaches 40°F. This would have to be wired to control the outlet that the cable is plugged into. Or use the Thermocube TC-3 outlet adaptor to control the cable.


No it cannot. If you have extra, try to pull it off the mesh and zig-zag it on a portion of the floor not covered by the mat. Keep it about 2 inches apart and don't overlap the heating element.

The new stat will fit the existing junction box.  You can use the ‘old’ sensor but there will be a 6-8 degree offset, meaning on the new stat you will have to program the temp 6-8 degrees higher.  The new stat also has an ambient control mode (A mode) which you can use and bypass the sensor altogether.  Or you can install the new probe by scratching out a grout joint, placing the probe in between the tiles and running it up the wall, then replace the grout.

The heating cable can only replace the heat loss through the insulation. You cannot maintain 15°C without insulation. Use the outside diameter of the double-walled pipe to calculate how much cable you will need for that section.

Heat is generated as electric current passes through the conductive polymer core between the cable’s conductors. As the ambient temperature drops, the number of electrical paths through the core increases and more heat is produced. Conversely, as the temperature rises, the core has fewer electrical paths and less heat is produced.


The Gardian heating cable does not produce enough heat to melt snow.  It might produce as much as 9 – 10 W/ft when embedded in snow or ice but it takes 30 W/ft2 to actually melt snow and ice.  The heating cable is on the roof to prevent melted snow and ice from refreezing and turning into ice.  To keep a liquid as a liquid requires much less energy that trying to melt a solid into a liquid (ice or snow into water).  The heating cable is on the roof to provide paths for the melt water to leave the roof and gutter before it can refreeze into an ice dam or icicles. If you plug it into an outlet and hold it in your hand, does it feel slightly warm?  If it does, then it is working.  If you just touch it or lay it on your hand, it might not feel any warmer than the surface or air that surrounds it.


We do accelerated aging tests on all our cables. The test results indicate that the cables should retain up to 75% of their rated power after 20 years of use.

The W51-100 will always produce some amount of power even though it self-regulates. The RM-3 controller will turn the cable on when it is 38°F and moisture is present and in contact with the sensor and will turn off when the temperature rises above 38°F or no moisture is detected. It also has a hold-on timer which can extend the power-on time by 3 hours. The question becomes, is the extra expense of the RM-3 worth the cost of power consumed if the cable was not controlled.


There are two things that can reduce power on a section of cable; 1.) Water ingress into the bus wires which increased the interface resistance of the wires and the heating core, 2.) Exposure to temperatures that exceed 150F. I doubt the second explanation occurred but you may be getting water into the cable either from an improperly installed end seal or because the cable is immersed in water for long periods of time.


Please check to see that the floor sensor is landed in terminals 1 & 2. If this is mis-wired, it can put the thermostat in a permanent vacation mode. Usually ER is displayed also.


The 9800 FlexFit plug is tripping on ground fault. Causes for a ground fault can be damage to the cable, water in the plug or end seal or a mis-installed  plug or end seal where possibly the black conductive core material or bus wires are touching the ground braid.

This fitting has to be torqued to  60—70 ft-lb. These  are NOT  fully tightened  at the  factory.


There should be no issue with the product itself. Take care that no holes are drilled through the vanity for power or plumbing. There will be, however, a build-up of heat underneath that vanity. If they could install a small vent in an inconspicuous area of the vanity, it will help the heat to escape. A good spot is in the toe kick of the vanity.


Gardian (W51) cables are factory-terminated and cannot be altered with a splice and still maintain the CSA approval or the warranty. You should order the appropriate WinterGard Wet cable for your circuit length with either the H900 or H908 connection kits.
